Saracens 40 Exeter Chiefs 22

May 5, 2012, 3:15 pm sourced from saracens.com

Saracens ran in four second half tries to secured a 40-22 bonus point victory against Exeter Chiefs at Vicarage Road on Saturday. Scores from James Short, Rhys Gill, Alex Goode and Charlie Hodgson gave Sarries the victory that sets up a semi-final clash against Leicester Tigers. Saracens trailed 10-9 at the interval. An early Gareth Steenson penalty was cancelled out by Owen Farrell before the visitors crossed the line. With a scrum deep inside the Sarries 22, they worked the ball wide and Tom Johnson crossed under the posts. Steenson converted. Farrell reduced the lead with two further penalties before the break. Sarries started with second half very strongly and had crossed the line twice in the opening 10 minutes. Firstly, Phil Dollman’s dropped pass on halfway gave James Short a clear run at the line which was converted by Farrell and then Rhys Gill took a ball at pace 15 metres from the line and powered over. Farrell added the extras. Farrell extended that lead with a penalty on the hour. Saracens scored a third minutes later and it was a fantastic score. Charlie Hodgson made the break on halfway and he fed David Strettle out wide and it went through two pairs of hands before Alex Goode crossed the line. Farrell converted. Hodgson went all the way to the line with 10 minutes left in the game as he spotted a mismatch, made the break and crossed the line in the corner for the bonus point try. Farrell converted. Replacement prop Chris Budgen breached the Saracens defence late in the game when he went over from close range and then Matt Jess went over in the corner minutes later, but they turned out to be nothing more than consolation scores for the visitors. Saracens line-up: Goode, Strettle (Maddock 65), Wyles, Barritt, Short (Hodgson 50), Farrell, Wigglesworth (De Kock 50), Gill (Smit 55), Brits (George 55), Nieto (Stevens 41), Borthwick (Kruis 64), Botha, Wray (Fraser 41), Melck, Joubert. » read full article

Saracens visit Great Ormond Street

May 3, 2012, 9:39 am sourced from saracens.com

Saracens visited Great Ormond Street on Wednesday, as the Premiership champions continued their partnership with the world-renowned children's hospital. Saracens players Will Fraser, Justin Melck and Petrus Du Plessis toured the hospital's wards and enjoyed the chance to meet patients and their families. Will Fraser said the hospital held a special place in his heart after getting an opportunity to meet patients from GOSH last season. He said: “Despite facing some really tough times, the children and families we met today were all so positive and had smiles on their faces. I was bowled over by their bravery and I was amazed at the phenomenal work carried out by doctors and nurses. I’ll be taking part in the RBC Race for the Kids run this year, so please sign-up to this exciting challenge and raise as much money as you can to help Great Ormond Street Hospital stay at the top and continue its superb work”. Justin Melck added: “For me, coming to Great Ormond Street Hospital really puts things in perspective. The hospital is such a positive place despite the serious challenges that patients, families and staff face every single day. When we walked in everyone greeted us with a smile. It’s very humbling to think that by spending a few minutes with each patient, they can forget their problems for a short while.  We even managed to convert some children to become Sarries fans which is fantastic!” Earlier in the season, Saracens welcomed a group of Great Ormond Street patients to Old Albanians, giving them a chance to spend a day behind the scenes at the club. » read full article
